Equality Advocates Pennsylvania is a non-profit agency dedicated to achieving equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals in Pennsylvania through direct legal services, education, and policy reform.
Equality Advocates was founded in 1996 by activists and attorneys who identified an unmet need in Pennsylvania for direct legal services and advocacy for LGBT people on a grassroots level. Equality Advocates’ office is located in Philadelphia, and houses a staff of eight, including three practicing attorneys and a full-time education and outreach coordinator. Equality Advocates is also the home of the country’s first law student clinic dedicated to LGBT issues.
Equality Advocates’ current activities reflect its three-pronged mission of legal service, education, and policy reform. Our office provides legal assistance to approximately 700 people annually through a statewide telephone hotline. We directly represent numerous clients in a wide variety of legal matters. Equality Advocates also coordinates educational activites to more than 10,000 people annually. In addition, our office works to enact pro-LGBT legislation and defeat anti-LGBT legislative efforts thorugh education, lobbying, coalition coordination, and bill drafting and technical support.
